CANON LAW INSTITUTE

General Information

A delegation of the Korean Catholic Church visited the Vatican Council of Churches and mutually agreed that the establishment of the "Patriarchy Canon Law School" is necessary and possible for the Korean church. The delegation of the Korean Catholic Church met with the Minister of Culture and Education of the Vatican to discuss the issue of the Canon Law School in detail, and the Vatican Ministry of Culture and Education has sent positive possibilities and basic guidelines for the establishment of the Catholic Canon Law School in the Korean church.

According to the basic cough presented by the Vatican's Ministry of Culture and Education at the time, the Catholic University (President Park Young-sik) and The Pontifical University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the Philippines signed a "Memorial Of Agreement" between the two universities with the core content of "Incorporation" to establish a Canon Law school in Korea.

The president and officials of the Catholic University visited the Vatican's Ministry of Culture and Education, and the Cardinal and working-level officials of the Ministry of Education and the UST revised the 'Incorporation' to 'Aggregation' among the MOA contents of the Catholic University and UST and signed it.

In March 2017, the Canon Law School was established at Catholic University, and Father Han Young-man was inaugurated as the first president of the Canon Law School, and the first freshman of the Canon Law School was admitted. In addition, Father Ji Yong-sik, the head of the school, was inaugurated as the acting president of the Canon Law School in April 2022, and as of March 2024, the 8th freshman of the Canon Law School was admitted. Along with the establishment, it is operated as a Joint Degree Program with UST on the advice of the Minister of Culture and Education of the Vatican.

Catholic University's Graduate School of Canon Law seeks to mobilize human and material capabilities at the request of the church to efficiently train Canon Law experts and serve as the basis for the lifelong education of priests and the development of the church. The quality classes provided by this graduate school are conducted not only in accordance with the provisions of the Vatican's Ministry of Culture and Education, and are conducted with subjects that cultivate the ability to read Latin, Italian, and English. With the establishment of the Canon Law School, we intend to provide an academic foundation for the revitalization of Canon Law research, such as academic activities and publication of domestic Canon Law experts.

After graduating from the Catholic University School of Canon Law, it became the first graduate school in Korea to be able to award a joint degree from the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Vatican.
